1999 Nissan Maxima Engine Won’t Start Sometimes – Justs Cranks

Reader Question Hi, I have 99 Maxima. about two days ago I try starting the car but it was giving me hard time. so I though it might be cause its too cold. then when I shut it off and try to start it again, it did the same thing.

I had to crank it for about 10 second before it started up. but when it starts up, it runs great and does not shut off. then today I try starting it and it crank and when death. like when the battery dies, so I hooked a booster pack to it and try starting it but nothing. I have ignition but wont crank now. think you know what might be causing that? thanks

Hey there

If the engine turns over and over but won’t start…I would have someone bang on the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber hammer or block of wood AS you crank the engine over. This can help kick start a weak fuel pump. If you still can’t get it to start…you will need a mechanic and a tow truck I am afraid. There is not much a do-it-yourselfer can really do these days without the proper tools and manuals.

If the engine will NOT turn over and over….like the battery is dead…I would try cleaning the battery cables and making sure they are good and tight and charge the battery a few hours and see what happens.

If the headlights come on good and bright, watch them as you turn the ignition key…if the headlights go out…you probably have a bad connection at the battery cables. If the headlights dim as you turn the key to start you probably have a bad battery, if the headlights stay bright as you turn the key to start you probably have a bad starter or some other ignition switch/ alarm system problem.

Blessings,

Austin Davis
