2001 VW Passat Driver Side Headlight Has High Beam Only

Reader Question I have a 2001 VW Passat that left headlight is not working on low beam. The left high beam does work. I have changed bulbs, and fuses but the left low beam still does not work. The right side headlight does work on low/high beam.

I have also tried switching the left headlight bulb with the working right headlight bulb. When the right side bulb is placed on the left side it will not work on low beam. The old left headlight bulb (non-working low beam when in left) does work high/low beam on the right side.

Suggestions?

Hello there

The first thing that comes to mind is a bad ground connection. Check the connectors and the wires going to the connector, trace them back as far as you can and make sure they are tight. I would do this with the low beams ON, so if you do happen on the problem area you will know about it when the bulb lights up. Second thing I would look at would be the headlight switch inside the dash, but that would require a wiring diagram and a test light….and time.

I am not aware of a common problem with this on this vehicle, but I don’t see a lot of Passats in my shop either.

Blessings,

Austin Davis

Please help! I have an 88 lincoln town car. My headlights will only work for about 2 minutes on regular dim lights. I have to pull my switch back and hold it to use my high beams so I can drive at night. Dont know what it could be.

My first guess would be a bad headlight switch, these are very common to overheat and cause damage to the wireharness attached to the switch. Ford use to sell an updated wire harness along with the new headlight switch. Visit the parts department at your local dealership. Any mechanic can install it for you.
