Should I Use Head Gasket Sealer

shoudl I use a head gasket sealerWe went ahead and changed the head gasket with NEW heads not re-manufactured and new radiator.  Now no more overflow out of the expansion tank BUT I’m getting white smoke out of the exhaust.  I put my hand on it and it did leave water droplets.  So I’d say the damn new head gasket didn’t seal.

So my only option left now is to try the K & W block sealer you speak off.  I don’t want this crap clogging up my new radiator though.  When we torn down the engine it was full of the copper sealant I had used before that didn’t work.

I have both the K & W Nanotechnology Head Gasket & Block Sealer (Green plastic bottle) and the Orange can Block Seal Head Gasket Repair.

Tell me what to do because I’m about to drive this car off a cliff.  It’s just that I need to pay for a surgery I need that insurance won’t cover and I can’t afford to be buying a new car right now.

Sincere thanks
Danny

Well sounds like you have made some progress. I would drive the car awhile and see if you are loosing coolant or not. You might still have some old coolant in the exhaust system that needs to be burned off…and can take a few miles to do that.

If you can, get on the freeway at 60M PH for 20 minutes or so and lets see if the smoke goes away, if you loose any coolant in the radiator or if the engine overheats before we do anything else.

If you loose coolant, I would get a cooling system pressure test and make darn sure there are no external leaks you are missing.

Using the Sealer is a last resort BUT that stuff really really works well.

MY Directions for The Sealer

If you are reading this and want to try the sealer on your headgasket leak do it this way, which I have done 100’s of times for customers in my shop.

1. Mix up the K&W Block Sealer (Nanotech version is fine as well as the older) in a bucket with plain tap water.

2. Drain out ALL coolant from your engine and radiator as best you can.

3. Add in the bucket mix to the radiator or overflow bottle and mix in plain tap water from a garden hose.

4. Drive the vehicle for a total of 500 miles

5. Drain out the sealer mix and refill with coolant and water, usually 50/50

That is all we do, and it works much better than the can instructions.

I have a turbo eclipse that overheated badly due to a blown radiator line. I want to know if the sealer will work. The head gasket blew bad enough that the car won’t start due to lack of compression. It was putting water into 3 of the 4 cylinders. No water In the oil. It lost all the water when the line blew and i only know water gets into the cylinder because i put water in after it was towed back. Water will also pour out of the side of the engine when i put it in the radiator. I know there is no cracked block add the car made no unusual noise before o shut out off. It only has 57,000 miles on the car. This is my baby but i cant afford the 1500 to have it fixed. HELP!

No unfortunately the sealer is not going to work in this case, the engine has to start and run. For water to pour out of the engine, can you see where it is coming from????

You could have a cracked block, a bad freeze plug on the side of the block, a water pump that is leaking or something else.

if you can not see the leak with your naked eye, I would rent a cooling system pressure tester from your auto parts store and use it to find the leak. Are you absolutely sure there is water in the cylinders? You did a compression test yourself on all cylinders? If so….then its toast.

Pull off the head and take it to a machine shop for a complete valve job ($225), then replace the headgasket and thermostat and change oil and filter.

I used it today, so far so good, I’ll let you know once I put a few miles on.

Are there 2 differet but similar products called K & C Fiberlock Gasket and block repair? The product I bought 401224 mentions nothing about draining the coolant, removing the thermostat and filling with water before using the product. Just Pour and go, leave product in place.

K&W makes two versions, the newer Nanotech version in the plastic green bottle and the older version Engine Block Sealer in a hard metal can. Either product by K&W will work just fine. I use the older…just because that is what I have always done.

Just wanted to post my results. Did use the KW sealer and DID use your directions and within an hour the white smoke stopped coming out my tailpipe and appears to be fixed. I will drive it 500 miles as per your instructions but so far I am jumping for joy.

    BIG thanks

I used Blue Devil headgasket sealer and it did not work for me. I will try your instructions and use the KW sealer you like Austin, thanks for the suggestion.

Awesome info! Gonna do this today.

  7. Sammy says:

I have hear about this sealer but was a little gun shy of using it. I will give it a try, what else do I have to loose? haha

    • Austin Davis says:

Sammy, in my opinion it is the best headgasket sealer out there. Would recommend you use it as per MY instructions not those on the can. It works much better and is a heck of a lot easier too.
