Car Engine Stalls When It Warms Up

Reader Question: My car stalls when it warms up and I am driving it. I can drive in reverse without it stalling but if I put it in drive and push the gas, it dies.

My husband has determined already it is not the fuel pump or filter and it is not my cat converter.

Do you have any advice on what could be making it do this?

Hey Kari,

If he is sure it is not caused by lack of fuel pressure to the engine do to a weak fuel pump, I would look and listen under the hood with the engine running for a vacuum leak. Check all the rubber vacuum hoses and make sure they are intact and not broken causing a hissing vacuum leak.

If you do not see or hear anything under the hood, I would ask your mechanic to clean the throttle body and idle speed control motor. You really should do this as maintenance on a regular basis anyway.

It will improve starting and smooth out rough idle complaints and dying at idle complaints. This is relatively quick and inexpensive to have done and it could cure your problem.
