2002 Honda CRV - 60,000 Mile Maintenance Costs

Reader Question: I have a 2002 Honda CR-V, which received 60,000-mile service at a local mechanic's shop recommended by a friend.

They told me I had to flush all my fluids: anti-freeze (cooling system flush) at $136.20, brakes at $108.03, transmission at $149.69, power steering fluid at $137.65, and they did an oil change. When they were done with all the charges, it was $911.69

Was this a reasonable charge? Labor alone was $718.47, parts were $277.53, discount $94.50, tax was $10.19. They said they threw in a free air filter.

Please let me know if this is a "reasonably priced" mechanic.

Those prices seem a little high to me, comparing them to labor rates and current prices here in Houston TX. I do agree with the fact that it is a good idea to periodically flush those fluids though, but I think those prices are about 20% more than they should be.

Not sure what the $94 discount is all about, but I guess the discount and the free $8 air filter is supposed to make you feel good about spending $911! Hahahah…

Also, those prices only add up to about $530 so I hope the other $400 for spent on something useful like spark plugs, fuel filter, brake inspection, radiator hose inspection, etc. etc. etc.

The labor charge was so high because there is no tax charged on labor, so most shops will inflate the labor charges to dodge the taxman.

Here is a list I made of items that I feel should be inspected and replaced at 60K miles. You might want to compare my recommendations to what you were actually charged for just to make sure there was not an important item overlooked.
