Reader Question I have a Ford Probe 1996 model. Three weeks back, the temperature gauge went up to H. I stopped the car immediately, waited a little while and put coolant. Went to the mechanic next day, he changed the thermostat. After that, it just fluctuates, it goes from 1/2 to 3/4 but doesn’t go completely to the H part. It comes back to the 1/2 mark in less than 30-35 seconds. What could be the problem?

Hey There

It could be anything.

I would first do a cooling system pressure test to determine if you have a coolant leak somewhere. Then I would inspect the electric cooling fans up near the radiator. They should cycle on and off as the engine heats up. Then I would check the radiator and make sure it is not restricted with calcium deposits or rust.
