Reader Question My Ford Fairmont has intermittent symptoms – Battery indicator light on, charge indicator going off end of scale, engine power decreases as if dropping down a gear. Sometimes, I can go a full half an hour’s journey. At other times, the above symptoms are happening quite frequently within just a couple of miles.

Thank you for your advice.

Alf

Hey Alf,

I think, I would start with a basic electrical system test, which should include the following -

1. Load test battery
2. Check alternator output
3. Check voltage regulator operation
4. Check for a voltage drain

I rather suspect a problem with the voltage regulator or the alternator. This simple and inexpensive test can confirm that.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
