2001 Dodge 1500 Ram Transmission Won’t Go Into Reverse

Reader Question Mr. Davis –

I own a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4. Recently a “clicking” noise has been coming from the transfer case/transmission area. I wasn’t sure what that exactly meant, however bad turned to worse. Two days ago my truck lost the ability to engage in reverse.

The truck moves fine in drive, 1st and 2nd gears, but does not engage in reverse. I am not sure what avenue I need to take or why it wont engage. I am curious if this problem occurred with the transmission itself or the transfer case. I would be very grateful of any help you can offer me. Thanks a lot!

Sincerely,
Brian

Hi Brian

I would assume the problem to be in the transmission not the transfer case. There is a reverse gear, and that is it’s sole job is to reverse…sounds like something happened to it. I am not a transmission mechanic, but I would assume the transmission needs to come out and be taken apart.

I would be prepared to overhaul the entire transmission….depending on what they find, but since this is a large job labor time and cost wise, it might be beneficial to have it completely overhauled while it is out.

Blessings,

Austin C. Davis

  1. K Jewett says:

You mentioned the transmission shifts 1-2. What about 3rd?In the Chrysler 500 and 518 (44re/46re) the TWO components required to reverse are actually the Direct Clutch (3rd) and the reverse band. In other words, if you don’t have 3rd you Cannot reverse either. Ken J
