Should I Buy This Cheap Used Car?

Reader Question

Hi Austin,

We had a 1997 Suburban that was recently totaled and we are looking to replace it. We have found one Suburban that is priced very well, but seems to have a major issue. It’s getting coolant in the oil following an oil change. It seems like it might be a blown head gasket or maybe even a cracked block.

I’ll post the seller’s description below. We would like to know the likely culprit as well as the worst case scenario and the probably costs of the repairs. It’s priced well enough that even if we had to put $2000 in it it would be a good buy. Much more than that and it’s probably better to pass. The motor has 116k miles and it’s a 1999.

The seller said:

I changed the oil and filter and after that the oil pressure pegged the needle. The gauge reads up to 80 psi. I was told to put a new filter in as there had been some bad filters that would not bypass and could cause this problem. I did and the pressure returned to normal. After that I started getting coolant into the oil.

Some more questions and a little internet searching and the conclusion is that the high oil pressure pushed out one of the pressed in plugs in the oil galley and therefore is letting coolant get into the oil. I have completely flushed the coolant and oil, with new oil and a filter. It is now sitting with no coolant in it at all.

Thanks for your insight.

Blessings,

Ann

Well hello there Ann,

Thanks for your email. Honestly……I would steer clear of this vehicle, there are just WAY too many good used vehicles on the market with less problems. This engine COULD need a head gasket replacement or some other internal engine repair and your $2,000 could be used up pretty quickly. This is a 10 year old vehicle and there will be other maintenance and repair issues as well as this major one you know about.

If you are DEAD SET on this vehicle….and kinda seems like you are, take it to your local auto mechanic and tell them your concern and that you want a “cooling system pressure test” to see if there is an internal coolant leak. I personally would leave the pressure tester hooked up to this vehicle for an hour or more to make sure there is not an internal coolant leak.

If it passes the test…..then I would take a chance and buy it. if it failed the test and there is a confirmed coolant leak, I would pass.

I have had some great results with this inexpensive over the counter head gasket additive.

Head Gasket Repair

I got my fingers crossed for you!

Help – I Need To Buy a New Car

Reader Question
Hi Austin,

I really like your site – thanks for writing all those helpful articles. I feel like I am much more educated on auto mechanics than I was 5 hours ago. :-)

My question follows: I tallied up how much my 98 VW Golf (177,000 KM) has cost me in repairs over the past decade (not including regular oil changes and new tires) and I arrived at a figure of just over $6,000.

According to my records, every year I have taken the car into the shop for repair work — everything from a broken cassette deck (twice actually), to a broken water pump, new muffler/resonator, new heater core, new struts/shocks/, new wheel bearing, new tie rod and CV joint, new timing belt, new spark plugs/wires, two new ignition coils, master cylinder work, etc. etc. etc. Is this “normal” maintenance on a car or does this sound a bit excessive to you? This is my question.

I’d really like to find out if my vehicle repair history would classify as “normal” or a little excessive because it will help me determine if I will ever buy another Golf. I have heard that VWs are not reliable and my experience with the Golf kind of supports that.

If I don’t get another Golf, I am going to buy a Toyota Yaris. Since Toyota’s are considered one of the most “reliable” cars out there does that mean that I can expect to cut my repair bills in half over the next decade with a Yaris??? Am I making sense?

Thanks! And Happy New Year!
Nancy K.

Hello there Nancy,

thanks for the kind words. I am not a big fan of VW just because of the less than great maintenance records of many of my customers. I think your repairs might be a little more than normal. You almost never go wrong with Toyota, although I am not familiar with the Yaris, still its Toyota.

The Camry has been on my top list of car recommendations for years. I can say 1 very important suggestion, make sure the vehicle was manufactured in Japan…this will be evident by a “J” as the first letter to appear in the VIN code. Your dealership can also tell you this info….a Japanese built vehicle has a much better maintenance and resell record than vehicles assembled elsewhere.

I also like the Honda Accord and the Kia Rio both are great cars…the Rio is a pretty slick little car with a nice price tag, although the resale value with the Honda and the Toyota will hold up better than the Kia.

My top list would be

1. Toyota Camry – Japanese
2. Honda Accord – Japanese
3. Nissan Maxima – Japanese
4. Kia Rio – Korean – Actually this tops my list for value and maintenance record. We have a Kia Sedona mini van…second one, and we love them. Kia is going to really take market share soon.
5. Hyundai – Korean

The Kia Rio is a very nice car….actually ALL Kias are pretty nice, you would be surprised. The price is nice too.

Buying A Car From a Police Car Auction?

Reader Question There is one of those police seized car auctions coming up in my town, and I was just wondering if buying a used stolen or seized car from a police auction was a good idea or not?

Howdy John

I personally have never purchased a vehicle from a police car auction, but this is what I do know about them.

Police car auctions are conducted mostly by police agencies, county sheriffs and law enforcement agencies and the cars on options are generally those which are discarded or confiscated cars.

Usually the police department winds up collecting these cars owing to arrests and forfeitures. Police car auctions and government auto auctions are less likely to cause problems. If the dealer is legitimate they are bound by certain laws when running a car auto auction, but that is no reason for you to get lazy about doing your due diligence and researching the vehicle you are interested in before you make your bid.

In most cases you are not allowed to drive the vehicle before you bid…so make sure you know what you are doing and are prepared to take some risks. I have heard from a few website visitors that good deals CAN be made at these types of auctions if you are willing to take the risk.

Check to see if the car auction house offers an extended warranty. Use your best judgment. Check whether all the VIN# stickers in a car match. Otherwise, it was either stolen or repaired with the parts of another car, which is not good for resale.

2003 Honda Civic Used Car Buyers Guide

Reader Question Hello Austin,

I am looking to buying a 2003 Honda Civic and the Carfax turns up that the car hasn’t had any reported maintenance at a Honda dealership since the time of purchase.

Would you mind giving me a ballpark figure as to how much a 30k and 50k service would run me if I were to go and have them done? (I am possibly going to use this as a bargaining tool.) I tried looking on the Honda website, but it won’t give me anything but a place to log in.

Thanks!
Nina

P.s. I read what the 50k service entails on the site, is it the same for the 30k?

Thank you for all your help and you are amazing for offering all of this advice to people online!
Nina

Hello Nina,

The maintenance COULD have been performed elsewhere besides the dealership, so Carfax would not have a record of that work being performed but it could have been. The maintenance schedule prices will vary widely, even among Honda dealers in your area, call 3 dealers and you will probably get 3 different estimates.

Why? For the most part, these scheduled maintenance items are fully of “inspections” rather than “replace this, replace that” items, so you are going to pay the dealership to inspect and look at components of your vehicle THEN when they find something that needs to be replaced, you will be charged extra.

Some people are hard on brake pads, and at 30K you might need a brake job, where as some people who do mostly highway driving may not need a brake job until 50K. So, the prices of these maintenance items can vary widely depending on the driving habits of the driver.

If you just want a ball park figure to use as a bargaining tool, I would use $300 for the 30K and $500 for the 50K. I would also get on the Internet and start looking at www.ebay.com and www.autotrader.com and find similar cars with similar mileage and features so you can compare prices.

Here is a pretty nice used car check list you might want to print out and fill out as much of the info as you can yourself.

Reader Question: Dear My Honest Mechanic,

Shall I keep my 2000 Ford Windstar after the transmission is broke down (need US$1,500 to replace with a 70k used transmission)?

It has 180k (highway driving) miles on it. A couple of months ago, I just put US$450 on it for the brake system.

On the other hand, should I buy a new used car?

Please response soon since I do not have a car to use and I have two children.

Thank you very much.

Shing

Hey Shing,

Before you make that decision, I would get your regular mechanic, or a mechanic that you trust to thoroughly inspect the vehicle for you and see what other maintenance items might need to be addressed in the near future.

If the rest of the vehicle gets a clean bill of health report, I would probably stick with the Ford Windstar and install the used transmission.

However, US$1,700 for a used transmission seems very high to me. I could probably get your transmission overhauled for about that price maybe just a little bit more.

Just for grins, call two of your local Ford dealership parts departments and ask them how much a rebuilt transmission is. Then call your local mechanic and ask them how much they want to install this transmission for you.

This way you get a Nationwide Ford warranty just in case anything should happen away from home. I would charge you $525 to install your furnished transmission in my shop.

I would also call a few local junk yards in your area and find out how much you can buy a used transmission for and do they offer an extended warranty, most will for a nominal fee.

Then call two local transmission-rebuilding shops in your area and get quotes to totally overhaul your transmission, also find out how long it will take to complete, and what is the warranty period and how and where do you make a warranty claim. Most transmission shops require you to return to their shop for any warranty work.

If by chance, your Ford Windstar after inspection is deemed needing many other costly repairs, I would have your mechanic inspect the used car you are considering. There is a good chance the “new” used car could need more repairs than your current vehicle.

I have a great used car checklist that your mechanic can use on your current vehicle as well as any newly purchased vehicles.

Shop Online For Cheap Used Cars

With the technological advancement, it is now possible for everyone to search the web for everything what they required. What if you are looking for used cars online? How would you benefit if you are shopping for online used cars?

If you are searching for the perfect used car, but do not have the time to go all over town to find the car you want, you can turn on your computer and find many resources for used cars.

Today, you can find used car dealerships, classified ads for used cars, and even in some cases find used cars online at auctions. However, there are a few things you need to take into consideration before you purchase a used car online.

Tip 1: Know what you want

Before you begin your search, you should prepare a list of the make and model of cars you would consider. Along with this list, you should include any options that are important to you. Remember, you are searching for a used car some may have minor problems or even larger ones.

Know what you expect and how much you are willing to spend for repairs if the car you happen to desire needs repairs. You should also check out the Kelly Blue Book to learn what the car is worth before you let your emotions take over, unless you just love the car and do not really care about its true value.

Tip 2: What you can spend

You may have an idea of how much you are willing to spend on a used car, however, you should also consider that if you do not have cash upfront to pay off the vehicle you may be looking at monthly payments, especially if you wind up purchasing from a car dealership. Sit down and figure out how much you are willing to pay monthly without causing you any type of financial stress. Now, stick to your guns, do not allow the monthly payments go over this amount.

Tip 3: Financing

If you know you are going to need financing in order to purchase the used car you have in mind, then it would be in your best interest to shop online for a car loan. The internet has made it quite easy to compare different loan companies, their interest rates, and calculate how much your monthly payments will be.

Be sure to take the time to learn what is on your credit report before applying for a loan. This is one thing that can make or break how much you will have to pay in interest. This does not mean you cannot get a loan if you have bad credit, it just means that you will be paying more in interest than a person with excellent credit.

Tip 4: Search Online

If you know what make, model, and options you want and you have pre-qualified for a loan you have the ammunition you need to purchase a used car online. Search all the websites that offer used cars on your list.

Do not just jump on the first one you find, you may learn later that you could have saved hundreds of dollars if you had searched a bit longer. Most of the time you will be able to contact the person or dealership that is selling the vehicle either through email, contact form on the website, or over the telephone to ask questions regarding the car.

Tip 5: Negotiate Price

Now, that you have found the used car of your dreams, you can go in person, test-drive the car, and then talk about price. Keep emotion out of the way.

The salesperson can see how much you want the car and this will give them the edge. Remember to stick to your affordable amount and you will be driving home in the car without any hassles since most of the work was done at home on your computer.

It is recommended that you go through a thorough inspection, investigate and then take a final decision as it saves in in terms of time and money.

Tips to Purchase a Used Car at Auction

Does purchasing a used car satisfy you? What are the tips to purchase a used car?

Buy Government Seized Cars CHEAP

Police Auto Auction Cars

Seized Cars For Sale

The most important thing you should remember when you go in search of purchasing a used or even a new car is that the person selling the car wants to sell the car. They may not come right out and lie to you about the car in question; however, they may not mention any problems if you do not ask and yes some may even lie to rid themselves of a lemon.

The number one thing you should do before searching for a used car is to know what type of car you would like or at least have some models and types in mind. You can search online or talk with car dealerships to learn what the price might be for the make and model of the car you are seeking.

You can even look up the car in the NADA to learn what the car is worth by year, make, and model. This is a good estimate on what you would get if you traded that car in to a dealer. Okay, now you know how much money you need for the different cars you have in mind.

Now, where do you go to find out about reliability and other factors for this car? You can search online for reviews at car forums, with consumer reports, or chat with others that have the car now or owned one at sometime. Ask pertinent questions such as what parts were replaced, gas mileage, and even questions regarding comfort.

It is always in your best interest to take any used car to your own mechanic prior to purchasing instead of going on your love for the car. Just because you have always dreamed of owning a 1962 corvette and the one you found looks awesome, does not mean that it is mechanically sound.

Pop open the hood, look for worn hoses, wet spots on the engine, and look for corrosion around the battery posts. You may not be able to tell much this way but you will at least get an idea if you may have to change hoses, battery cables, or if there could be a leak somewhere such as coolant or oil.

When you take the car on a test drive, listen for any unusual knocking, hissing sounds or other noises that you are not familiar with, and then when you talk with your mechanic he may know what these sounds might be.

Check that the lights work properly low and high beams, brake lights, turn signals, horn, air-conditioning and heating system. You may not be thinking about staying warm if the temperature outside is 95 degrees, but you will really enjoy a warm car when the north wind starts blowing.

Many times if you are purchasing a used car from an individual you will not have any type of warranty, however, if you purchase through a dealer you should get some type of warranty. Many times, this warranty will be for a certain amount of months or miles put on the car.

In most cases, the warranty will state exactly what items are under warranty such as the engine or transmission, for a certain amount of months and the dealership will cover all parts and labor. If the warranty only covers the transmission, then it does not cover replacement of a water pump, fuel pump, or other parts to do with the engine and the same applies for any limited warranty.

Also with a dealership instead of an individual, you may be able to apply for a payment plan if you would rather pay monthly payments until the car is paid for. Many times, you will need a down payment or good credit in order to receive a loan.

You should however, be careful when applying for a loan of any kind. Be sure that you are getting the best deal around. You may be able to apply for a personal loan at your bank and receive better interest rates than you would at a car dealership.

Another thing to remember is to shop around. If you found one car you like, you will more than likely find another that is the same or better and you may be able to find it for less money or in better condition.

When you are ready to purchase, read the total agreement. Do not just glance over the large print. Be sure that you understand everything in the agreement and if you do not – ask. It would be best to learn upfront if your warranty will end before you have the car paid off.

Whatever it is, it is recommended that you follow an expert advice, investigate through online where plenty of resource is available for you before going to purchase a used car, so that it can save you from unbearable situations.

You desire to own a car but you are little bit confused whether to opt for leasing or buying. Leasing or Buying, so what’s a big deal in it? Let’s see.

Buy Government Seized Cars CHEAP

Today, many people are wondering if leasing or purchasing is the best when it comes to new cars. Both leasing and buying have wonderful advantages as well as their own disadvantages.

No matter if you plan to lease or purchase you will be more than likely making monthly payments. Leasing does give you a bit of relief in that your payments will be lower than if you were purchasing, however, you will never own the car. If you purchase, your monthly payment will be higher, but you will own the car after all your payments are complete.

You may hear that leasing is better by some of your family or friends and then you will hear some that buying is better. Before you make your own decision, you should learn the similarities and difference of both options.

When you decide to purchase a car, most people have to apply for a loan. Not too many people have enough cash lying around to pay for a brand new car; therefore, they apply for a loan.

Buy Government Seized Cars CHEAP

The loan consists of two charges, the principal charge and the finance charge. The principal charge is the total value of the car and the finance charge is the interest that is placed on the loan. You should shop around and find the best possible interest rate before applying for a car loan; you may find that you can receive lower monthly payment through your own bank than with the car dealership.

Remember, when you are making monthly payments to purchase a car, the car is yours as long as your make your payment. You can travel any place you would like to go and make any additions that you would like to your car or other customizations.

Buy Government Seized Cars CHEAP

It is your car unless you default on the loan and then the car can be repossessed by the loan company that gave you the loan to purchase the car.

There are a couple of disadvantages to purchasing a new car. Your monthly payment will be higher than leasing, is the number one disadvantage and the other is that you will have to sell the car if you do not want the car any longer.

When leasing a car you will have to make monthly payments that consist of two charges, a depreciation charge and a finance charge.

Buy Government Seized Cars CHEAP

The depreciation charge is the price that the car has gone down in price while you were using the car, this will give the dealership compensation for the depreciation value that you used. The finance charge is of course the interest that you are paying on the term of the lease.

When you lease a car, you will never become owner of the car. You cannot make any additions or customizations to the car. You cannot sell the car or trade it in if you get tired of it. If you decide to take it back and the lease is not up, you will have stiff penalties to pay. You will also not be able to go any place you like.

Buy Government Seized Cars CHEAP

When you are leasing a car, you are given a certain amount of miles that you are allowed to drive during the term of your lease. If you go over the amount of miles specified then you will have to pay for every mile that you go over the original amount.

The short-term advantages of leasing are of course the fact that the monthly lease payment is quite a bit cheaper than monthly payments for purchasing. A matter of fact the payments are between 30 to 60 percent lower than most loan payments.

However when it comes to long-term advantages purchasing wins hands down, if you do not plan on keeping the leased car after the term of the lease. If you plan on returning the car at the end of the term of the lease and leasing another car, of course, you will end up paying more in the long run.

You will own your car after you have paid off your loan, however, with a leased car you will have to lease another one and another one compared to driving the same owned car over the same amount of time.

Making this decision is a personal one and if you prefer to drive a new car quite often, then leasing will give you this chance even if you will never own the car. You can always sport around in a brand new car.

So, do not make decision in a hurry. Plan well and investigate, consult an expert and find the best possible solution which suits you well.

Car Buying Service How Does It Benefit You?

Have you ever heard of car buying service? In what way do they assist you?

Buy Government Seized Cars CHEAP

Before we go into the details of the benefits let’s look at what a car buying service is and how it works.

You desire a new or at least new to you car, but you do not have the time to search all over town for the car that you want. Many times, you just head on down to the car dealership closest to you and pick out a car and you are done.

Buy Government Seized Cars CHEAP

However, in most cases, you only purchased that car because you did not see the one you wanted on the lot, it was in your price range, and above all else, the salesman told you that you would not find a better deal anywhere else in town. There are many reasons why we do not find the car of our dreams.

- No time – Don’t want to deal with car salesmen – Don’t believe you can find the car you desire in our price range

Now, if you could give someone else the information on what type of car you want make, model, and year, what you can spend in monthly payments, how you will finance the car, and how long you wish to pay for the car, you would be overjoyed.

This is what a car buying service does for you. However, they go the extra mile. They will represent you at car dealerships throughout the country including your favorite to find you not only the car of your dreams but also the car of your dreams at the best possible price, thus saving you money.

Honestly, a car buying service is just a consulting firm whose only job is to help you save as much money as possible when you buy a new or new to you vehicle. Car buying services also advise you on financing, leasing, trade-ins, and help you every step of the way to ensure that your car buying is no longer a hassle but an enjoyable experience.

The individuals at a car buying service know the ins and outs of purchasing a new or used vehicle and will research, locate and then get the best possible price for the car that you want.

Car buying services are not affiliated with any dealership or manufacture so they will give you information that is objective and unbiased. They represent you when they are searching for the vehicle that best suites your needs. These people have been in the business for years, they understand the lingo, where the rebates are, know how to use incentive programs to your best benefit, and of course know all the secrets of car manufacturers and car dealerships.

All car buying services will of course charge you a fee for their services, however, you will know the exact amount upfront. It will not be on a commission basis like the one you see at car dealerships. The car sales person will try to get you in the most expensive car on the lot because he will receive more commission. With a car buying service, they are here to help you save money, not try to pressure you into a high payment and extra money in their pocket.

Benefits for using a car buying service can be broken down into these categories:

- No Hidden Fees – you know exactly what you have to pay to the car buying service and to purchase the vehicle of your choice.

- No Salesmen – They are not trying to sell you a car; they are providing a service for you to search out the car you desire at the best possible price.

- Travel – You only have to fill out a form online or talk with the car buying service via telephone. You do not have to travel all over town to find the car you want.

- No Pressure Sales – No one will pressure you to purchase a car. They will give you the information they found for the vehicle of you choice and the decision is left up to you on whether you buy or not.

- Reliable Information – The car buying service will give you all the information they find concerning the type of car you desire. You will know exactly all the information upfront and nothing will be hidden in the background as a surprise once you are ready to purchase.

- Advice – They will give you advice on interest rates, car dealerships, and even car insurance.

Car buying service helps you a lot, where you can get an expert advice that saves you from terrible situations which would otherwise occur from your improper knowledge of car buying.

Car Purhcasing When is the Best Time to Buy?

Used Cars or New Cars, doesn’t matter for you, when all the options satisfy you. Then which is the perfect time you would go normally for car purchasing?

Buy Government Seized Cars CHEAP

“Year End Clearance Sale” was of course, at one time the best time to buy a car; however, this may have been true in the past because car dealerships needed to sell the last years models to make room for the new model. In today’s automotive market, new cars are being introduced all year long, therefore, this old saying does not hold true any more.

In order to know the best time to buy a car, you have to do your homework and pay close attention to when next year’s models will be arriving. Some manufacturers have their new cars on the lots in the spring or summer; however, there is no set date for the arrival of the new cars.

If you are observant, you will pay attention to when a dealer announces that the new models are arriving. Now, is the time to purchase last years models. They have to be sold to make room for the newer models. This is when the dealer is apt to make you a great deal on a new car or at least one from the previous year for that model.

December is a great time to visit a car dealership, not because of the car dealership or their inventory but the car lots are vacant of customers. Many people are out purchasing Christmas gifts and the thought of a new car is not on their mind, therefore, deals can be made because customers are scarce.

In some cases, when it is time for the new cars to be sent out, you may find that you can get in when new car dealers sell off cars at low prices to clear space for new car models, however, you must pay attention to when they will arrive. Car dealers can receive secret factory to dealer incentives, which can be as high as $6000 and even receive new car consumer rebates. This means that the dealer can receive this much money back for selling you the car, so they have more money to play with.

Another thing to consider is the car salesperson. He has quotas to make and must meet these quotas because he will be judged by his sales performance. If he is not selling cars then he may be put on the butcher block and be gone within the next month.

Car dealerships desire salespersons that can sell cars. If they are not selling, they are not making money for the dealerships. Therefore, visit a car dealership when the pressure is on for the car salesperson to perform.

If a car salesperson has had a slow week, then he will be more than willing to do everything in his power to make a sale even if he does not receive much in commission. If he has had a slow week, then Saturday would be the perfect time for him to give you a deal of a lifetime. Also, at the end of month, is another great time for better than average deals since he will be trying to get his quota in before the end of the month.

Visiting a car dealership after the 25th of the month is a prime time for a good deal. In addition, the end of year is another great time to get a better deal. This will be the sales person’s last chance for good annual figures. Shopping in December for a new car could give you all kinds of rewards especially if your car salesperson has not had a good week, good month, or good year.

December may be the overall best time to buy a car since customers are scarce, car salesperson want to report a good year, and of course, the dealership and salespersons want to receive commission for their efforts.

The best time to buy a car is when you do your homework, know when there are rebates to be had, know when the dealership has been slow, and look for deals. You can always negotiate a better deal if you use your car as a trade-in, get better interest rates by having good credit, and of course go shopping when car sales are down.

It is recommended that you consult an expert before going for either a used or new one. Not only it can save your time and money but also help you find the best deals in near future.
