Buying Car Insurance with International License

Reader’s Question:

Can I purchase car insurance if I only have an international drivers license?

Jane

It is difficult to find auto insurance if you do not have a valid US drivers license. Although some insurance companies will offer you a car insurance policy with an international licnse, most insurers will ask that you get a US drivers license within a specified time.

Purchasing and having it registeres can also be difficult withot a valid US drivers license because they wont be able to determine your credit history. The best way that you can do is to look for dealers who may be able to help you that are experienced with customers who pay cash for vehicles and has international license since it will be difficult to have the car financed if the visas will be valid for only a year.

If you have found a vehicle that you want to purchase, you should contact the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to determine the requirement for car registration and how to go about getting a title to your car in your name. They may also be able to advise you which car insurance companies that will insure individuals with international drivers license.

Some state may require you to have a state identification car ir drivers license to get a title and to have the car registered. Also, some state may require yo to show proof of car insurance before you can register your car so remember to get car insurance before you purchase a vehicle.
