Reader Question: I have a Mitsubishi Montero Sport, the alternator is under the front right side of the motor. When I changed the alternator, I notice oil on it and maybe possible inside of it.

If oil get in the alternator would this cause it to fail?

I think this is a bad place to put an alternator. I am going to find and stop the oil leak, but I would like to know if this could be the reason for the alternator failure.

Thank you for your time.

Nat

Hey Nat,

Engine oil getting inside the alternator or a battery that is weak or has a bad internal cell are the two main causes of alternator failure.

Yes, fix the oil leak.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
