Reader QuestionI was using my sons car this morning and thought I would be nice and fill it up with gas for him. It is a 2003 Dodge Neon. I started pumping the gas but noticed the nozzle didn’t fit into the tank. I had pumped about half a gallon when I noticed it was diesel.
I stopped the pump and called my husband who in turn called a mechanic he knew. I was told it would probably not hurt anything if I went ahead and filled it up. That it may smoke a little but it should be okay. I can not stop worrying about this. My son works nights and is sleeping right now. I am dreading telling him. He loves his car and I just want to make sure that it will be okay before I tell him. Please tell me it will. Thanks, Donna
Donna ….ouch!
I would also say it probably will not hurt anything. I would make sure to keep the tank full of GASOLINE at all times for awhile to make sure the diesel stays as diluted as possible, So as you use a 1/4 tank of fuel, then fill it back up again.
This is much better than the opposite, gasoline installed in a diesel engine…serious damage can occur and the fuel tank should be flushed out completely.
