2006 Jeep Rubicon Engine Knock

Reader Question: My 2006 Jeep Rubicon 4.0 L engine has a slight knock – not a compression knock. More like a clicking sound, bur its getting louder.

Have you heard from anyone else who has had this same problem? My dealer tells me its normal engine noise. I have had 6 Jeeps with the 4.0 L engine and have never had this problem.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Ken

Hi Ken,

No, I am not aware of this issue with any of my client’s vehicles. If this clicking noise is in the upper engine area, like under the valve cover I would suggest you try a can of Marvel Mystery Oil additive which you can buy at any auto parts store.

Just add the can of additive to your clean engine oil. It is great for quieting noising valve train complaints. It is safe to use and if it helps, you should use it with every oil change.

Blessings,
Austin Davis

    Ken,
Like j Kirk says, check for TSB’s. I’ve had to condemn two engines now because of a lifter tic on the passenger-side bank. There is an inherent issue where the rocker arms can shift from their intended position and cause a noise. I’m not sure if this is your issue but it would be best to have a Jeep trained professional take a look at it. In both of these cases I had, the owners had been less-than diligent about changing their oil every 3000 miles, which results in HEAVY SLUDGING in these particular engines. Both vehicles had less than 40,000 miles so I sent them to the dealer to try and take advantage of warranty

Hey Ken..I also have a 06 rubicon, same click but I know its not inside the engine block or the lifters making the click. It seems to be coming from inside the distributor cap or something that looks like a distributor right next to the engine. It seems to come and go as it pleases, very loud sometimes and then nothing for awhile..Im baffled as well. Maybe someone else knows what this is if they read my comment??
