2002 BMW 525i

Reader Question: I have a 2002 BMW 525i. I have been told that there are rotors on one set of brakes and not the other.

The problem is, one of the local brake house specialist says there are rotors on the back and front. The guy at the parts store said they show rotors for the back but not the front. The guy at the dealership says there are no rotors on the back only on the front. Which is correct?

If there are rotors on the front but not on the back, what kind of brakes are there on the back?

Dwayne

Howdy Dwayne,

I would assume you have four-wheel disc brakes on the front and the rear of the vehicle. You can usually look through the spokes of the wheels to see if you have rotors or drums. If you have rotors, you should be able to see the brake pads clamped onto the side of the rotor.

Look through the wheel on the front to get an idea of what you should look for. If you have rear disc brakes, it will look identical to the front.

This article has a picture of a brake rotor so you know what they look like.

There’s definitely a lot to know about this topic. I like all of the points you’ve made.

actually the BMW has both rotors and drums in the rear. The drum works throught the emergency brake system.
