Reader Question: Good morning,

I feel no mushiness/extra play in my brake pedal on my 1998 Ford Windstar. The mechanic says I need a new brake cylinder.

The brake “idiot light” is the only indication that there may be something wrong with the brakes.

Aside from the pedal, what other telltales should I be experiencing?

Thank you,

Brian

Howdy Brian,

If the RED brake warning light is on, there could be a problem inside the brake master cylinder. There is a sensor inside that is probably bad and that is why the mechanic wants to replace it.

The cylinder bore part might still be good, thus you do not experience any pedal problems, but the electronic part of the brake cylinder could be bad.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
