1999 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Reader Question: I have a 1999 Ford F-250 with a 5.4L engine. When its cold it will not start easily will fire but takes 3 times or more before it starts. Only does this when it is cold. It runs fine after it starts.

I changed fuel filter put dry gas in take and it is still the same.

Please help me.

Thank you!

Tom

Hey Tom,

I would start with the basics here and see what happens. The need for an engine tune up comes to mind first for delayed start complaints. Worn spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and ignition rotor if you have them can cause extended start complaints.

A weak fuel pump that takes awhile to build up fuel pressure also is something I would check out. Checking fuel pressure at the engine with a manual fuel pressure gauge will determine if this is a lack of fuel pressure problem or a weak spark problem, like the need for a tune up.

A dirty throttle body and idle control motor can also cause extended start complaints. You might check and clean them or ask your mechanic to inspect them for you. They should be cleaned as regular maintenance anyway, just like an engine tune up. You could have other problems, but rule out the easy stuff first.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
