1999 Chevrolet S10 Check Engine Light Flashes

Reader Question: Hello,

Today I was driving my 1999 Chevrolet S10 with 46,000 original km. All of the sudden, my air bag warning light came on. Then I noticed my dash lights starting to flicker.

Then about 5 min down the road I lost complete power. My battery is an optima red top (new) tested it and its fine. When I turn the key nothing happens, no lights work, complete loss of electric. Nothing caught fire, no funny smells, truck has over half a tank of fuel, the truck has always run great and I have never had a problem like this.

Do you think a fuse blew? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Brandon

Hey Brandon,

You should have a large "Main fuse" under the hood; check all your fuses first.

Next, remove the battery cables and double-check your cables for any corrosion that is built up behind the small battery bolt and the cable itself. I would bet you have a bad battery connection or a dirty corroded battery cable problem.

I would even swap out that new battery for a known good battery just to rule out the possibility of a bad battery. Also, follow your battery cables around and make sure they are in good condition and have not been cut or corroded.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
