1997 Honda Civic 2 Dr Coupe

Reader Question: I have a 1997 Honda Civic 2 Dr Coupe with 1.6L engine. The check engine light is on and the code corresponds to EGR low flow. I replaced the EGR, but the code still says the same thing, after having been cleared.

The check engine light has gone out several times as I started the car, and each time it briefly runs rough. It may stay out for a day or two then comes back on without a change in operation.

I bought the car with the CE light on, and it did not seem to have any problems, not even a reduction in gas consumption. The first time I had the code pulled at Advance Auto Parts; it also had a code for cylinder misfires on all four cylinders so I replaced plugs, wires, dist. cap, and rotor button. That code, after being cleared never returned.

I have test driven a 1998 model civic, and it seemed to have the same problem.

Is there a pattern here? What might be the solution?

Thanks.

Lee

Hi Lee,

I am not really sure what is going on here or not going on. I would check to make sure you have a clear vacuum passage under the EGR valve, since I have seen the intakes of these engines get restricted with oil sludge and carbon deposits that restrict EGR flow. We have had to drill out some of the intake passages and use some strong intake cleaner to remove the sludge.

There is a chance that the intake will have to come off to be properly cleaned, if this is actually what it happening to your engine. I would first start with inspecting the possibility of this.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
