Reader Question: I have a 1996 Chevrolet 1500 Pickup 4×4. It has the 5.7 with auto tranny. I keep getting the check engine light. When I run the scanner on it, it comes up with a code 1406 and sometimes a 301.

The 1406 is always on there after I clear the code it usually comes back within 10 or so miles. If you have a clue how to fix this problem, I would appreciate it. According to the codebook, my truck does not have a 1406 code.

Thank you for your time.

Jay

Hey Jay,

The 301 code should be a misfire on the #1 cylinder. So check your basics, spark plug, plug wires, etc. etc. The other 1406 code is related to the ERG valve position. If this code continues to return, I would remove the ERG valve and clean it with some intake cleaner and a toothbrush.

If you still get the code, you might have to replace the EGR valve or get your computer memory “flashed” at the dealership to completely remove the code. We have had good success in cleaning dirty ERG valves of carbon deposits.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
