Reader Question: Hello,
I drive a 1996 Buick Century. It has been very cold here recently (Illinois). My Service Engine Soon Red Light is on. Could it be weather-related?
I had an oil change at Jiffy Lube in November or December.
My gas cap is on correctly.
Thanks,
Mary
Hey Mary,
If the light is RED, that means danger, stop the engine immediately. Usually the problem is lack of engine oil pressure or the engine is overheating do to lack of coolant in the radiator or some other cooling system problem.
If the check engine light is YELLOW, that is the service light that the computer controls. MANY things can cause that light to come on. The weather temperature outside is probably NOT one of those factors.
Have you read my article about check engine lights? It might help you narrow things down a bit. You will probably have to see your local mechanic and have your computer codes scanned with his special equipment to see what the problem was and what needs to be done to get it to go off again.
