1995 Nissan Altima

Reader Question: I have a 1995 Nissan Altima, which cranks and run smoothly, will drive about a mile and acts like it is running out of gas….new fuel filter, new distributor cap and rotor button, new mass air flow sensor, new engine control module.

Do you have any suggestions?

Becky

Hi Becky,

Hummmm…you say it feels like its running out of fuel…but have you replaced other parts and not the fuel pump? I would definitely start with checking the fuel pump PRESSURE. Your mechanic can do this with a manual fuel pressure gauge or you can usually rent a manual fuel pressure gauge from your local auto parts store and do it yourself.

Sometimes you can bang on the bottom of the fuel tank with your fist or a rubber hammer to help jump start a weak fuel pump. If the engine performance changes when you bang on the tank, you probably have a weak fuel pump that is not supplying enough fuel to the engine.

Other things I would check:

1. Oxygen sensor operation

2. Check for a restriction in the exhaust system or catalytic converter

3. Check spark plugs AND spark plug WIRES
