1993 Toyota Corolla – Dies at Stops

Reader Question: My 1993 Toyota Corolla is turning off when I stop. This usually happens on a hot day but the temperature meter does not go up. It does not show signs of overheating.

I am able to turn it back on and continue to drive but it eventually turns off.

Thanks,

Elaynem

Hello Elaynem,

I would ask your mechanic to clean your throttle body and idle control motor. When these components get dirty they can cause erratic idle and dying at stops like you are having.

This is a simple and inexpensive repair and really should be done as part of ongoing routine maintenance regardless if it corrects this issue or not.

I would also as the mechanic to check the base idle setting, if the engine idle speed is set too low it can cause issues like this as well.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
